Share to twitterThe U.S. opioid crisis is back in the headlines after pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay $572 million for its role fueling the epidemic in Oklahoma. In 2018, more than 68,000 Americans died from drug overdoses and 47,000 of them involved some kind of opioid. Even though heroin, prescription opioids and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl are receiving the most attention, deaths from other drugs such as methamphetamines and cocaine are rising.
The research found that in 2016 alone, Americans spent an estimated $146 billion on cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine. Out of those four drugs, people spent the most on illegal marijuana, parting with $52 billion. RAND states that the market for illicit marijuana is roughly the size of the cocaine and methamphetamine markets combined. At $43 billion, heroin had the second-highest outlay, followed by methamphetamine and cocaine .
Cocaine consumption fell precipitously between 2006 and 2010 but that decline started to slow by 2015. In 2006, Americans spent an estimated $58 billion consuming 384 pure metric tons of cocaine and by 2015, spending and consumption fell to $24 billion and 108 pure metric tons respectively. In 2016, the estimated quantity consumed grew again to 145 pure metric tons though spending remained unchanged at $24 billion.
