Americans spend more than $10,000 per person on health care, more than double the amount shelled out by people in Australia, Canada and the UK -- but those dollars don't translate into better health outcomes, according to a new study.
In the US, health care spending accounted for 16.9% of the economy in 2018, nearly twice as much the average developed nation, according to a new study released Thursday by The Commonwealth Fund. Americans spend more than $10,000 per person on health care, more than double the amount shelled out by Australians, Canadians and residents of the United Kingdom.
The high cost of health care is one of Americans' biggest complaints. Spending is fueled more by high prices than usage, previous studies have found. The future of the nation's health system is a key issue in the Democratic presidential primary this year, with progressive candidates such as Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts seeking to shift insurance coverage to the federal government under"Medicare for All.
