‘Scary stuff’: Americans react in horror to NZ basketball nickname

Our at-all-times very insular friends from the United States of America showed their limited knowledge of anything outside their own borders again as New Zealand got on the board at basketball’s world cup.

Behind some brilliant long-range shooting, the Kiwis survived an overtime thriller against Jordan to win 95-87 and keep their hopes of progressing to the next stage of the tournament alive. For most fans across the globe there was nothing out of the ordinary to see, but the tweet began going viral as an American audience reacted in horror at what they read in the caption.

“13 threes on a 52% 3PT shooting,” it read. “Tall Blacks caught fire from beyond the arc to earn their first win.”The comments started flowing thick and fast. “Who caught fire?” one wrote. “Oh they did, did they?” wrote another. “The what now?” added a third.“Okay I thought homie’s name was tall blacks because he hit the first few threes in this clip but now I’m lost,” another wrote.

But perhaps the most controversial – albeit short-lived – nickname for a Kiwi national team was the rebranding of their badminton side in 2004.
