The morning of the ribbon cutting, American Village announced its founder Tom Walker passed away. Walker considered Independence Hall the “crowning glory” of the campus. “It’s a sad day as well,” said Gov. Ivey. “My friend Tom Walker envisioned this as a teaching tool for our young people, so they always keep America free.”The replica building is modeled after Philadelphia’s original landmark, where the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were debated and adopted. “It was Thomas Jefferson who reminded us that the preservation of this great thing, but delicate thing, called a democracy had to preserved through good leadership,” said Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr. “Leadership with integrity, leadership with ability, and leadership with vision – Tom encompassed all of those.”The governor, a former educator herself, stated that she understands the importance of history. “Oh, man it will make history come alive for them,” Ivey said. “I’m real proud to be a part of American Village.” Independence Hall is now a prominent focal point inside the village, honoring American History and a visionary who left a mark on education in the State of Alabama.Geoffrey West executed Thursday for 1997 capital murder
