Starting Friday and running through the weekend, the organization will send teams of three out to homes in North Pole and Fairbanks to install smoke alarms and educate the public about how to prepare for a potential fire.Every year, a different community in Alaska is highlighted for the event based on perceived need, and this year North Pole was chosen.
While this weekend, and this month in general, are seeing a focus on installations, interested community members can always reach out to the Red Cross for a smoke alarm in their homes. According to Julie Swisher, Executive Director at the American Red Cross of Alaska, “This, actually, is a program that we do all year round. During the month of May is just our big push, so we’re really trying to focus on smoke alarm installations during our ‘Sound the Alarm’ campaign, but Red Cross does this all year long, so if you need a smoke alarm any time of the year, call your local office, call us at the Red Cross office in Fairbanks and we’ll get you signed up for an alarm.
