TV review: AHS1984

has always been a franchise run at least in part on nostalgia, albeit nostalgia sent through a radioactive swamp, pulled through a mess of barbed wire and refracted through a broken mirror until it became something bloody, twisted and new.

The season's plot is intentionally thin. We begin in 1970 as camp counselors in the early stage of a threesome end up penetrated instead by the business end of a knife, part of the sort of massacre that tends to diminish enrollment. Morrison is having a hoot, or as much of a hoot as you can have when your character is defined by the enormous prosthetic encased in his golden track shorts, which apparently is a thing we can show on FX now. That's a big part of whyis always amusing to check out. No, not the artificial dongs, but the entertainment Murphy and Falchuk find in putting this ensemble of mostly returning favorites through a new set of paces each year.

American Horror Story: 1984 Hacks Up Slasher Movie Tropes and Stitches Them TogetherAmerican Horror Story: 1984 Hacks Up Slasher Movie Tropes and Stitches Them TogetherThe category is ’80s slasher realness, and American Horror Story: 1984 has more hallmarks of the genre than you can shake a machete at. Heavily leaning on Friday the 13th (its setting is a fictional camp that’s reopening years after a tragedy occurred, this one referred to as “the worst summer camp massacre of all time”) with Halloween for backup (the purveyor of said massacre was caught, locked up in a psychiatric facility, and successfully escapes on a rainy night, letting out the other patients with him), American Horror Story: 1984 is a loving tribute to cheap cinema of misanthropy and exploitation. It is also a savvy callback to a horror subgenre that seems poised to make a comeback after the smash success of last year’s Halloween, which grossed $159 million at the domestic box office. This season, the anthology series’s ninth, premiered Wednesday on FX.
