American Eagle Outfitters put out their first official statement on the controversial advertisement featuring Sydney Sweeney in a post uploaded to The statement comes after a week of discourse about American Eagle’s new advertisement, sparking conversations over topics of eugenics and “Nazi propaganda.
” “'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans,” the statement reads, “we’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way.” Comments are less than convinced by the statement put out, stating there is a “lack of empathy” from the post.“Didn’t think the response could be even worse than the ad, but it somehow was,” another user wrote. However, some consumers appreciated the statement put forth by the company, claiming the “woke left” has gone too far. “Wow,” Cruz wrote, “Now the crazy Left has come out against beautiful women. I’m sure that will poll well.”for its new drink, the Golden Hour Refresher. The ad features “The Summer I Turned Pretty” star Gavin Casalegno saying, “Look, I didn’t ask to be the king of summer, it just kinda happened, this tan? Genetics. I just got my color analysis back. Guess what? Golden Summer. Literally."The controversial American Eagle ad features Sweeney on the floor buttoning a pair of American Eagle jeans, explaining how genes work. She says genes are “passed down from parent to offspring, determining traits like hair, personality, and even eye color." The camera then pans to her face as she smiles and says, “My jeans are blue,” playing on the words “jeans” and “genes” as well as Sweeney’s eyes being blue. Many online have drawn a parallel between this ad and Calvin Klein’s ad featuring Brooke Shields, who has since spoken out against the ad, in 1980. In an indirect response to the American Eagle ad, Abercrombie and Fitch and Old Navy put out their own denim ads. Abercrombie posted a video to TikTok with a model saying, “denim should feel like being comfortable in your own skin.” Old Navy’s ad features an image of a woman wearing an all-denim outfit and says, “These are the jeans your other jeans warned you about. All the washes, all the sizes, every style, fit to flaunt.”
