Malcolm Smith, whose enthusiasm for dirt bikes—and success racing them—helped introduce the sport to America in the 1960s and who came to define the still-growing popularity with off-road motorcycling into the 1980s, has died at the age 83 from complications of Parkinson’s disease.Smith may be best known for his starring role in the iconic 1971 Bruce Brown motorcycle documentary On Any Sunday. The movie was nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary .
Smith’s last SCORE race was on the 2004 Class 50 team of AMA Hall of Famers Chris Haines and Jack Johnson, who won the class with Smith riding the last section to the finish line of the SCORE Baja 1000.”After his competition riding days were over, Smith founded Malcolm Smith Racing, known commonly as MSR, to make riding gear and bike parts. After that he founded a powersports dealership in Riverside, California, called Malcolm Smith Motorsports that thrives to this day.
