Gallup poll reveals a steep decline in trust in the American courts, attributing it to perceived political bias and declining public approval of U.S. leadership.
Confidence in the American judicial system has plummeted to its lowest level in two decades during President Joe Biden's term, according to a Gallup poll released Tuesday. The decline in trust stems from public dissatisfaction with the perceived weaponization of justice against Republicans. Since Biden took office, former President Donald Trump has faced four criminal indictments, some of which were dropped after Trump's re-election in November.
Only 44 percent of Americans now express confidence in the courts, a sharp drop from the 62 percent recorded when Trump left office. This 18-point decrease is more significant than the percentage-point drops observed in countries like Myanmar (-46 percent), Venezuela (-35 percent), and Syria (-28 percent). Gallup's analysis of judicial confidence trends based on Americans' approval of U.S. leadership reveals a concerning pattern. Disapproval of U.S. leadership has coincided with a decline in trust in the judicial system, dropping from 46% in 2021 to 29% in 2024. Conversely, confidence among those approving of U.S. leadership remained stable at 62% between 2021 and 2023 before sharply declining to 44% this year. This mirrors, although more dramatically, the trend observed during Barack Obama's first four years in office. Significantly, this year marks the first time on record that judicial confidence among U.S. leadership approval has dipped below 60%, and the first instance where confidence in the courts has fallen below 50% for both approval and disapproval groups, resulting in a national figure at its lowest point in two decades
