American Airlines faced a nationwide flight suspension due to a technical issue, disrupting holiday travel plans. The FAA ordered the halt at the airline's request, citing a system-wide problem. Flights resumed an hour later, but the incident highlighted the potential for holiday travel chaos.
American Airlines temporarily halted flights nationwide on Tuesday due to a technical issue just as the holiday travel season peaks. Flights for American were cleared to fly by federal regulators roughly an hour after a nationwide pause order was issued by federal regulators. Just before 7 am Eastern time, the Federal Aviation Administration ( FAA ) ordered all American Airlines flights within the United States to be suspended at the airline's request.
American had reported a technical issue affecting its entire system with millions traveling for the holidays. American has not given further details about what technical issue caused the flight suspension and the airline did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The suspensions could not have come at a worse time for the millions of travelers expected to fly over the next 10 days. The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen 40 million passengers during the holidays and up to January 2nd. Many flights during the holidays are full, making cancellations even more disruptive than during calmer periods. Even with just a brief interruption, cancellations have a ripple effect that can take days to resolve
