An American Airlines flight carrying 67 passengers collided mid-air with a military Blackhawk helicopter on Wednesday evening, resulting in no survivors expected. The tragic incident occurred, leaving behind a trail of devastation and grief. 41 bodies have been recovered from the wreckage so far. The flight originated in Wichita, Kansas, and was bound for Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. The helicopter was part of a military training exercise.
Among the victims of this horrific crash were seven friends from Southern Maryland who were returning from a duck hunting trip. They were identified as Jesse Pitcher, Tommy Clagget, Mikey Stovall, Jon Boyd, Steve Johnson, Charles McDaniel, and Alex Huffman. The crash also claimed the lives of 14 members of the skating community. This group included six passengers from the Skating Club Boston, who were returning from the National Development Camp held in connection with the recent U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita. Sisters Everly and Alydia Livingston, from the D.C. area, had previously appeared on FOX 5 DC and skated out of Ashburn Ice House. Their parents, Peter and Donna, were also on the flight. Virginia figure skater Franco Aparicio and his father Luciano, from Dunn Loring, were also among the victims. Franco was known for his impressive skating moves, including the butterfly and the Y spin. Skater Brielle Beyer and her mother Justyna, from Aldie, Virginia, were also aboard the flight.Another young victim was 12-year-old Olivia Ter, a beloved member of the Prince George's County Tucker Road Ice Rink and an exceptional youth figure skater. Olivia was one of only four elite youth skaters from the region attending the U.S. Figure Skating National Development Camp. 16-year-old skater Edward Zhou died with his parents, Kiyan and Joe, from Fairfax, Virginia. Cory Haynos was traveling with his parents, Stephanie and Roger, from Annandale. The six skaters from the Boston area were flying into DCA as part of a connecting route to Boston. Two coaches, two young skaters, and their mothers were among those onboard. Spencer Lane, identified as an 'incredibly talented' skater by Zeghibe, was on the flight with his mother, Christine Lane. Jinna Han and her mother, Jin Han, were also on the American Airlines flight. 11-year-old Sean Kay and his mom, Yulia, were aboard the flight. Sean was considered one of the top ice dancers in the country for his age and dreamed of making it to the Olympic team. Their family, dad Vitali and three siblings, are 'left shattered' following the tragedy. Russian figure skaters Evgenia Shishkova and her husband, Vadim Naumov, were also among those on board. The couple were world champions in pairs figure skating in 1994 and narrowly missed Olympic medals that year at the Lillehammer Games before moving to the U.S. and coaching generations of young skaters in New England. They joined Skating Club Boston in 2017 as coaches. Inna Volyanskaya, a former skater who competed for the pre-1991 Soviet Union, was also reported to have been on board. The Associated Press reports that the remains of the soldiers will be at Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
