American Airlines' flight attendants union's board is set to approve a release to strike.

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants has been in negotiations with American Airlines since Feb. 2019.

Julie Hedrick, president at Association of Professional Flight Attendants and also American Airlines flight attendant, right, shout slogans, as American Airlines flight attendants, and their supporters picket outside of Terminal D at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2023.’ flight attendants are reaffirming their commitment to strike if they don’t reach an agreement with the Fort Worth-based carrier.

The board of directors of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, the union which represents American’s 26,000 flight attendants, will meet on Nov. 17 to approve a request from the union’s negotiating committee. The union would then request the National Mediation Board release the flight attendants from mediation, which American’s flight attendants have been in since June with the Fort Worth-based carrier. The release, if granted, then triggers a 30-day cooling-off period.

“A strike is the last thing we want to see,” Hedrick said. “But we fully intend to use all options available under the Railway Labor Act.”A ratified contract with pilots is enough to keep American Airlines Group feeling jolly headed into the holiday travel season, even after losing $545 million in the third quarter while competitors United Airlines and Delta Air Lines were racking up profits of more than $1 billion each.
