American protectionism can end up scaring not only countries we consider our business rivals, but those we consider our friends, as well.
That’s the message Canada’s newly appointed consul general Tom Clark diplomatically brought during his recent visit to Harrisburg. And it’s one Pennsylvanians would do well to ponder.Clark reminded us Canada is both a friend and neighbor to our country. In fact, it is arguable the closest friend we have in this mean world. Many Pennsylvanians hop across the U.S. border at whim for a quick vacation and welcome thousands of tourists from Montreal and Ontario.
In his recent trip to Pennsylvania, Clark spent several days meeting with lawmakers and business leaders, armed with some enlightening statistics to remind us just how close Canada is Pennsylvania.Pennsylvania businesses sell more goods to Canada than to our next four largest foreign markets combined.alone export $1 billion in goods to Canada each year, along with $33 million in services.export $811 million in goods in Canada each year, along with $41 in services.
That may not be what patriotic Americans intend when they shout these slogans, but it’s what our friends to the north hear. And it can be a little alarming.
