Today AMD is allowing reviewers to reveal the performance numbers of possibly the hottest and most anticipated PC hardware launch of 2024. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which is set to cost $479, is the first processor in its new Zen 5 Ryzen 9000 range with AMD's 3D V-Cache, which is an extra portion of cache added to the processor die or CCD that boosts performance, particularly in games.
AMD has moved the 3D V-Cache to the underside of the CCD, which means that it no longer acts as a thermal bottleneck, hindering heat transfer between the cores and heatspreader. Be benefit is that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D can run at much higher frequencies than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, gaining 200MHz on the peak boost and a base frequency 500MHz higher.
It’s maybe not quite worth the upgrade from the 7800X3D, but if you want the fastest gaming processor out there that also performs as a modern eight-core processor should in content creation too, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a stunning choice, even if it's set to retail at closer to $500 than its predecessor and is sadly out of reach for anyone with a $400 limit for their CPU.
Even more excitingly for casual gamers needing more multi-threaded grunt is that AMD should be releasing higher core count X3D processors in the next few months where a Ryzen 9 9950X3D could become the most desirable processor for at least the next 12 months. Thankfully we do at least have the Ryzen 7 9800X3D to put on our Christmas shortlists. Our community is about connecting people through open and thoughtful conversations.
