Is AMD canceling Threaderipper? Here's why it might be and why it might even make sense
CPUs we have today - both of which are only worth considering for very specific workstation-class use cases.I also argue that HEDT systems are getting more and more niche. Intel's Core i9-9900K is outstripping everything below the Core i9-7900X and 9900X, even in multi-threaded tasks thanks to its high frequencies, meaning you need to opt for something at least as powerful as the Core i9-9940X to make the financial leap from mainstream to HEDT worthwhile.
Motherboard manufacturers have hinted that the X399 chipset will be the end of the line for Threadripper owners I won't be naming any sources here, but one motherboard manufacturer suggested to me that current X399 motherboards may not support 3rd gen Threadripper CPUs. Now, the wording here was a bit hazy, as it doesn't mean there won't be a 3rd gen Threadripper product, but clearly given how Socket AM4 will definitely support 3rd gen Ryzen, it suggests that things are about to change for Threadripper as we know it, potentially leaving current X399 board owners with no upgrade path.
All that extra development time is time it isn't spending on it's more popular mainstream products too, so there are arguments from AMD's side to reduce Threadripper's breadth in terms of product stacks, focussing more on the high-end workstation-class workloads rather than a more general purpose CPU that's just as competitive in games as it is in content creation. That's arguably something Threadripper hasn't quite nailed yet too.
The next few weeks will be fascinating as far as AMD products go and I'm relishing finding out the final details as well as putting its new products to the test.
