Continued infighting at the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) has dragged labour registrar Letlhogonolo Molefe into its midst
The union has submitted its responding affidavit to the labour court regarding axed Amcu deputy president Nkosikho Joni’s allegations that he was dismissed unfairly, and has accused Molefe of being in cahoots with Joni.
Mphahlele states that Molefe allowed these members to “besmirch [Amcu founder and president Joseph] Mathunjwa’s name and provided them with advice on ways to attack, undermine and shut down Amcu”. The latter issue could see Mathunjwa and his treasurer-general, Jimmy Gama, having to step down from their positions as they are alleged to no longer be employed by mining companies.
Joni then decided to launch legal proceedings against the union, saying he only found out about the meeting, which was held to place him under suspension, from the media. “On October 31, Mathunjwa held a meeting in Pretoria with the union’s Rustenburg chair and deputy chair [Loyiso Cirha Tyabuko and Malibongwe Mdazo]. In that meeting, they resolved to ask me to resign with immediate effect. It is after I refused this request that I was suspended,” he says.He alleges that Mathunjwa asked him not to practise his “tribalist mind” and “Xhosa mentality” at Amcu. This, says Joni, happened at his first national executive committee meeting.
Mphahlele explains that there was nothing malicious or sinister about the vote of no confidence against Joni and that there were valid reasons to have him booted out.
