As Hobart's controversial AFL stadium build seems more likely, a second private investor has stepped forward with a proposal to convert Hobart's Elwick racecourse into a large sports and entertainment development, but it's been quickly quashed by the state government.
Melbourne developer David Marriner has put forward an ambitious proposal to build Hobart 's proposed AFL stadium at Elwick racecourse in the city's northern suburbs.
The jewel in the crown of the proposal was a large social housing development on commonwealth land at neighbouring Dowsing Point, which is currently home to an army barracks. He said the briefing also included "a summary of new technology they are considering bringing to Tasmania to develop affordable housing".
It's understood the deal hinged on the state government diverting $240 million of federal funding slated for housing and wharf upgrades at the Macquarie Point development to the new site. The deal would be a pivot from current plans to build an inner-city stadium to building one in the northern suburbs.
