OSHA fines Amazon $145,000 and mandates ergonomic changes to prevent worker injuries. Simultaneously, Teamsters union launches strikes at multiple Amazon facilities nationwide over working conditions, wages, and benefits.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA ) has reached a settlement with Amazon regarding alleged hazardous workplace conditions at ten of its facilities. The settlement requires Amazon to pay a $145,000 penalty and implement company-wide ergonomic measures to reduce worker injuries. OSHA will also continue inspecting the facilities for the next two years.
OSHA officials stated that this is the largest settlement of its kind and will resolve all outstanding ergonomic litigation against Amazon. However, it does not affect a separate investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York into allegations that Amazon concealed workplace injuries, which Amazon denies. Meanwhile, Amazon workers took to the picket line this week at multiple facilities across the U.S. Members of the Teamsters union organized the strikes in California, Georgia, Illinois, and New York, demanding better working conditions, wages, and benefits. The Teamsters called for Amazon to agree to bargaining dates for a contract by December 15th. Footage from Queens, NY, showed a peaceful picket line broken up by local police. Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien blamed Amazon’s “insatiable greed” for the delays in package deliveries and stated that the union had given Amazon a clear deadline to negotiate fairly with its members, a deadline they ignored
