After multiple years spent in development, Prime Video's highly-anticipated Fourth Wing series has been officially confirmed and is moving forward.

The Empyrean book series by Rebecca Yarros has been a romantasy sensation on BookTok. Amazon MGM Studios acquired the rights to the book series in 2023, the same year that the first installment was published and became a hit bestseller. Development began in conjunction with Michael B. Jordan's production company Outlier Society. Moira Walley-Beckett was tapped to be the showrunner, but following her exit, Locke & Key co-creator Meredith Averill became the new showrunner.
Now, the Fourth Wing adaptation has received a full series order from Prime Video. Jordan announced the news on stage during Amazon's upfront presentation. Also on stage was Lisa Joy, who is an executive producer and will direct the first episode, with Jordan saying before she was brought out that "This project required the right creative partner.
" Averill appeared on stage as well, where she spoke about the power of the source material. Rebecca’s books have become one of the fastest selling franchises of the 21st century, with a fandom so passionate, so devoted, they don’t just read these books, they live in them, and it’s because Fourth Wing is everything at once.
The emotional stakes are sky high, the battles are epic, power dynamics are thrilling, and underneath it is so much humor and heart and a romance that will consume you. Three Empyrean books have been published so far, with Iron Flame in 2023 and Onyx Storm in 2025, and there are intended to be five in total.
The story revolves around twenty-year-old protagonist Violet Sorrengail, who at the behest of her mother, goes to Basgiath War College to become a dragon rider, which sets her on a path filled with dangerous adventure and romance. The plan is for Prime Video to adapt each book into its own season. More to come...
