Amazon is being investigated by Germany’s antitrust watchdog for allegedly influencing third-party seller prices during the pandemic
Mundt added that Amazon’s potential abuse of its dominant position was "naturally the approach in such investigations," and noted that the company was cooperating with the investigation.that its systems “are designed to take action against price gouging,” while denying the market abuse charge.
While German investigators are focussing on Amazon’s decision to block high prices by sellers, the company is facing an investigation for enabling price-gouging in Italy. In March, Italy’s antitrust watchdog had Amazon and rival eBay over the alleged excessive rise in the price of products such as hand sanitizer and masks during the coronavirus crisis., sent back in April, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said that the company had suspended more than 6,000 seller accounts on its platform from around the world for price gouging on essential items during the pandemic. He also added that Amazon had removed more than 500,000 listings from its website for price gouging. The company, however, has not specified if any of the listings or sellers were from Germany. In the U.S., the company hasCongress to pass a law that would make price gouging illegal during times of national crisis. The company’s dual role as both a retailer and a marketplace for third-party sellers has run afoul of regulators worldwide.
