On Friday, the Western Cape ordered Liesbeek Leisure Properties Trust to temporarily stop construction and undertake “meaningful engagement and consultation” with the Khoi and San people.
Liesbeek Leisure Properties Trust will appeal a High Court order halting construction of its R4.5 billion development River Club development in Cape Town.Construction came to a standstill last week after the Observatory Civic Association and Goringhaicona Khoi Khoin Indigenous Traditional Council hauled the developer to court, for an interim interdict.
Once complete, the development is meant to house Amazon’s Africa headquarters, among other companies.Construction came to a standstill last week after the Observatory Civic Association and Goringhaicona Khoi Khoin Indigenous Traditional Council took the developer to court. However, the LLPT is not backing down, saying that it is working on an appeal to save the construction. The developer acquired the land for R12 million and began construction eight months ago.
LLPT further stated that the construction halt also meant that the work the developers had undertaken to rehabilitate the"heavily polluted" waterways near the River Club property, had to stop.
