Amazon has settled a High Court claim with a former senior employee who alleged that the company's culture of overwork and impossible deadlines caused him to suffer a severe mental breakdown. The case highlights ongoing debates about corporate work expectations in the tech sector.
A senior Amazon employee, Sean Rebecchi, 38, has secured a confidential financial settlement after suing the e-commerce and tech giant for over £100,000, alleging that a corporate culture of overwork and relentless pressure led to a severe mental breakdown.
The case, which was defended by two Amazon companies, centered on claims of an 80-hour work week culture, impossible deadlines, and a promotion-driven environment that exacerbated Rebecchi's pre-existing vulnerability to stress. While Amazon's legal team argued he was a self-driven perfectionist, not a victim of excessive demands, the dispute concluded with a settlement before reaching a full trial. The agreement includes a payment to Rebecchi and coverage of his legal costs, with all terms kept confidential.
Rebecchi's legal representation, barrister Simon Plaut, painted a picture of a systematic corporate expectation of extreme hours, particularly for those seeking advancement. He described a management structure that actively encouraged promotion as the primary measure of an employee's worth, with compensation increases tied directly to climbing the corporate ladder. According to Plaut, this culture manifested in a constant shifting of performance targets and goalposts, creating a cycle where employees worked relentlessly to meet newly raised benchmarks.
Rebecchi's tenure across multiple Amazon divisions-from an initial programme manager role beginning in March 2016, to a stint at Amazon Music, and finally to the Alexa AI project as a senior programme manager-was consistently marked by this pattern of an excessive workload and psychological pressure. The most critical period was his time on the Alexa project starting in November 2020. Rebecchi was tasked with writing the company's Natural Language Question & Answering 2022 plan under a severely compressed deadline.
He repeatedly flagged the schedule as impossible to meet, only to be met with the dismissive response, "this is the way we do things in Amazon.
" Furthermore, he alleged that he was told a person at his level should be able to deliver such work without complaint, a comment his lawyer framed as a deliberate attempt to shame him into working harder. The resulting stress and burnout led to sickness absences, culminating in a diagnosis of severe mixed anxiety and depressive disorder.
Even after moving to a customer solutions manager role at Amazon Web Services in June 2022, the alleged excessive demands continued, compounded by what he described as a hostile manager, causing his mental health to further deteriorate with symptoms including panic attacks, poor concentration, and irregular sleep. The settlement, reached in 2024, avoids a judicial ruling on the core allegations but brings a close to a significant legal challenge that spotlighted the human cost of high-pressure tech industry environments
