Amazon is pushing to be a leading player in the AI wars by aggressively investing $ billion in the OpenAI rival Anthropic, even as it quietly works to build a competing AI model codenamed Olympus.
This week, Amazon completed the second phase of a deal announced last September, when it committed to investing up to $4 billion in OpenAI rival Anthropic. The additional $2.75 billion invested is Amazon’s largest check ever into another company and yet another signal of how critical the development of large language models has become to Big Tech.
It’s the current pet project of CEO Andy Jassy, who made Prasad one of his direct reports last year when the AGI org was stood up. Amazon clearly sees frontier LLMs as core technology it needs to own, even if that potentially puts it on a collision course with its marquee AI investment.
