Buechel will retain his leadership role at Whole Foods , encompassing all aspects of the company's grocery portfolio, including Fresh supermarkets, its online grocery service, and Go convenience stores. \Doug Herrington, Amazon 's worldwide retail chief, announced the expanded responsibility in a memo to employees.
He highlighted Buechel's achievements in leading Whole Foods to record sales growth and expanding its presence to over 535 locations. Herrington emphasized that Buechel will continue to focus on making high-quality natural and organic groceries more accessible and affordable to customers. \Buechel succeeded co-founder John Mackey as CEO of Whole Foods in 2022. In his new role, he takes over from Tony Hoggett, who led Amazon's grocery business. Buechel will report directly to Herrington, a close advisor to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and a member of the S-team, a select group of senior executives responsible for overseeing various aspects of Amazon's operations. Amazon has been actively streamlining its grocery operations, seeking to unify its online and physical channels while attracting a wider customer base. Herrington stated in the memo that since establishing a unified Worldwide Grocery Stores organization in 2022, significant progress has been made towards simplifying, accelerating, and making grocery shopping more affordable. He highlighted efforts to integrate the extensive grocery selection across Amazon's vast logistics network and create a more seamless experience, particularly for Prime members. Herrington expressed confidence that Buechel's leadership will continue this progress.
