I’ve been writing about video games, television and movies for Forbes for over 10 years, and you may have seen my reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. I cover all manner of console and PC games, but if it’s about looting or shooting, I’m definitely there. If I’m watching something, it’s usually science fiction, horror or superheroic.
a live-action adaptation of the famed Yakuza: Like a Dragon series, though their show will just be called Dragon: Yakuza. I guess the original had too many words.
What’s wild about this is not necessarily that it’s a live-action video game adaptation. We’re racking up quite a few of those now, including Amazon’s own blockbuster Fallout series, but that the show already has a director and lead star announced, and a pair of release dates later this year. Here’s what we know:Actor Ryoma Takeuchi is starring as Kazuma Kiryu, the lead.
The series is going to be six episodes total, split into two three-episode releases a week apart So yes, I do find it pretty strange this show was announced out of nowhere and is already a little over four months away from release. Not that I’m complaining, this is just not how this sort of thing usually works.“It will be set mainly in the Kamurocho entertainment district, straight from the games, and follows Kiryu and three of his childhood friends in two time periods, 1995 and 2005.
“Having someone with such a large physical presence as Takeuchi makes all the difference. I understood that he knows his body better than anyone, so I left it to him to get into shape. Takeuchi did all the action himself as well. It was impressive.” It’s unclear whether this is meant to be a miniseries or ongoing series, but I would bet the latter, given how much Amazon wants to find new hits, and video game adaptations are proving to be profitable. Yakuza has a huge wealth of content to mine across multiple games, and I’m looking forward to seeing how this goes. I guess we don’t have to wait long. Our community is about connecting people through open and thoughtful conversations.
