Along an alley in Everett, you’ll find a cabinet. Inside, there’s a notebook filled with tiny testimonials.

“They make you happy, and they make you sad,” said Cassidi Ballou Kenyon, pointing to a note that asked for more food. “We're like most Americans and live pretty much paycheck to paycheck, so when I get notes like that, I can't help but not try and just spend a little extra money to donate. ” The pages of the notebook are filled with messages of gratitude and requests for help.

It stays safely tucked inside the Everett Free Pantry, waiting for the next visitor to leave a message.

“It’s hard for most everyday people to just buy groceries,” said Kenyon. "You spend $100 at Safeway for two bags – that’s crazy. ”Pasta sauce, hygiene items, pet food, and more. All of it was donated by Kenyon and fellow community members.

Kenyon started the free pantry in January when she saw a need among her neighbors – a need for food, for comfort, for everyday items. The concept of a free pantry isn’t new. Kenyon built her idea on a movement of free pantries across the country. She installed her first pantry in January but the demand was so strong she needed to upgrade by February.

Within minutes of being out by the pantry, a pair of donors stopped by to stock the pantry with shelf-stable goods.

“There’s clearly a need for it,” said Raechel Morera as she unloaded canned food and jars of Alfredo sauce.. “There’s a lot of other food banks or local non-profits, but something hyper local is obviously necessary. ” The generosity is infectious. Inspired by her creation, Kenyon’s friend, Annie, opened her own free pantry in Tacoma.

“Even if it's just like one item, you know, like one can of Alfredo sauce could change someone's life that day,” said Kenyon. “It's been really cool seeing different ways the community is showing up.
