A Padmé Amidala cosplay inspired by Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace unites the queen of Naboo with R2-D2. Expanding on George Lucas’ Anakin backstory plan, the Star Wars prequels revealed who Luke and Leia’s mother was. Despite the Return of the Jedi retcons, Padmé’s story was an essential part of the prequel trilogy, and the character has been a fan favorite ever since.
Cosplayer Berni shared an incredible Padmé cosplay based on the character’s very first appearance in The Phantom Menace, which saw the queen of Naboo in her instant-classic "Throne Room gown." SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT This Padmé cosplay also features R2-D2, whose first chronological appearance in the Star Wars timeline came from The Phantom Menace. R2-D2 helped fix Padmé’s Naboo Royal starship, saving the day and earning the queen’s respect. Both Padmé and Anakin would remain friends with R2-D2 throughout the Star Wars prequels, which obviously creates a parallel between Luke and his parents.
Padmé Knowing R2 Made The Star Wars Galaxy Feel Small R2-D2’s introduction in The Phantom Menace, as well as many other callbacks to the original trilogy in the prequels, made the Star Wars universe feel small. The Star Wars galaxy should be the home of countless planets and species, yet these new characters introduced in the prequels were suddenly running into well-known faces from the original trilogy. Of course, the Star Wars prequels were Anakin Skywalker’s origin story.
R2-D2 being on Padmé’s ship was just one of many coincidences that tied the prequel characters to the original trilogy. Anakin Skywalker being the one who put C-3PO together or Greedo appearing in a deleted The Phantom Menace scene are other examples. That said, establishing a connection between R2-D2 and what would become the Skywalker family early on worked.
