Amanda Shires talks befriending Bobbie Nelson, how their bond became an album

Shires will pay tribute to Nelson on July 8 at the Longhorn Ballroom with Asleep at the Wheel as her backing band.

, an intimate album of duets with pianist Bobbie Nelson, who died last year at 91. The album features a haunting version of “Always On My Mind,” written by Bobbie’s brother, Willie Nelson, who sings with Shires on the Gershwin classic “Summertime.”

One day, my violin teacher noticed I only like certain parts of classical music, so he showed me these fiddle tunes he’d transcribed from Frankie McWhorter, who played with the Texas Playboys. Songs like “Spanish Two Step.” After that lesson, I walked to the car and I told my mom, “I’m a fiddle player now.”

You have such a unique singing voice — it’s like a duet between Julie Andrews and Dolly Parton. But you were leery of singing for a long time. How did that change?My voice is influenced by the fiddle and the vibrato. A producer once told me to “do less goat and more note,” which was hurtful. So I didn’t like the sound of my own voice.

I said, “Yeah, we are! What other songs do we know?” We started playing and decided we were gonna start a band and travel once a month to play songs and go shopping and eat dinners, and although she can’t be here for that part of it, I felt like it would be a huge mistake to not continue with the music and the story of Bobbie Nelson.Me and Sister Bobbie: True Tales of the Family Band,I started to see where our stories are similar.

My whole thing with writing that was to try to tell that side of my family that doesn’t believe [in abortion rights] that they do in fact know somebody that has needed reproductive health care., you wrote some point-blank songs like “Fault Lines” about the ups and downs of your marriage — a topic that’s also explored in the recent HBO documentary about your husband, Jason Isbell.
