Amanda Seyfried as Needy with her hair down and black eyeliner in a promo shoot for Jennifer's Body
Amanda Seyfried’s gothic Twilight-style fairy tale is getting another life. Red Riding Hood, the 2011 fantasy thriller that paired Seyfried with Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, will start streaming on HBO Max in November 2025.
The movie was famously pitched as “Twilight meets the Brothers Grimm” — a dark, romantic retelling of the classic fairy tale that swapped vampires for werewolves and teenage angst for… more teenage angst. Well, if it worked for you the first time? Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood arrived just two years after she helped launch Twilight into pop-culture orbit. And you can feel that same DNA pulsing through this movie — moody lighting, love triangles, shirtless brooding men, and an endless supply of longing glances. Have you heard much about it since? Didn't think so. Tells you how it well it went. Seyfried plays Valerie, a young woman caught between two men: her brooding true love Peter and her wealthy arranged fiancé Henry . When a werewolf starts picking off villagers — including Valerie’s sister — panic spreads, and Gary Oldman’s in-no-way sinister Father Solomon shows up to “help.” Spoiler: he mostly just yells, waves silver around, and chews the scenery like it’s a steak dinner. Is 'Red Riding Hood' Any Good? Despite the promise of gothic thrills, Red Riding Hood didn’t exactly set critics’ hearts aflame. Many pointed out that its attempts at mystery and seduction felt more CW pilot than modern classic. Its themes of love, fear, and superstition get buried under melodrama and awkward attempts at teen rebellion — including a dance sequence that feels ripped straight out of Gossip Girl’s cutting-room floor. Collider's rather scathing review said: The majority of the cast does their best, but no one really has anything to work with. Seyfried remains as sexy as ever but I felt that the best she could give her performance was her ability to look good in a red riding hood. Gary Oldman just chews up the scenery but his character is so predictably villainous that you're left wondering why he found the role worth taking when he has so many memorable villain roles to his credit. By far the worst piece of casting is Fernandez. He has no chemistry with Seyfried, no vibrancy to make him a likable love interest, and it feels like he got the job because Hardwicke really liked his product-heavy hairdo.
