If many fans were enraged by the Watson acquisition last March in the face of nearly two dozen lawsuits, the bitterness over his alleged misdeeds have seemingly cooled with time. Now, concern has shifted to his ability to perform at a high level, fans say.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Lakewood sports bar Game On was a sea of orange and brown on Sunday as the Browns sought to end their losing season on a positive note, with a win against the archrival Pittsburgh Steelers.
“I will never buy that man’s jersey,” said bar patron Asia Reynolds, a 27-year-old nurse clad in Chubb attire. Referencing the bevy of sexual misconduct allegations lodged against Watson by massage professionals, she added, “I’m a woman, I really don’t like him.” If many fans were enraged by the Watson acquisition last March in the face of nearly two dozen lawsuits, the bitterness over his alleged misdeeds have seemingly cooled with time, even though he has shown little remorse. Now, concern has shifted to his ability to perform at a high level, many fans say.
By season’s end, however, the group’s criticism of Watson’s morals had morphed into criticism of his on-field play, Lockner said. Any prediction that the Watson acquisition might have hurt the franchise’s pocketbooks might now seem naïve. To be sure, there are plenty of Browns fans who are excited by the Watson deal, who brush off the allegations against him and believe he will have no problem regaining his form next year as a top 10 NFL quarterback.
