Alvin park Camp Mohawk revamped after repairs to Harvey damage

John DeLapp/CorrespondentThe site of the Brazoria County park at 1110 County Road 193 has seen varied uses for more than a century, including as a church camp and a Boy Scouts of America camp, said Bryan Frazier, the county's parks director. But Camp Mohawk, which is along Chocolate Bayou, was dealt a blow in 2017 when Hurricane Harvey brought Category 4 winds and rain that hammered the 55-acre park.

Much of the park, which has a lake and overnight facilities, was closed for more than four years, and work on two of its four cabins was completed in 2021. Through work mostly funded with FEMA hurricane recovery funds, the bulk of renovations have been finished, but work is ongoing to rebuild two more cabins and decks at the 2½ acre U-shaped lake. Information on total project costs was unavailable at presstime.

The lake features a canoe launch and recently installed fishing platforms and is occasionally stocked with fish, Frazier said.Despite living close by, the pair had never gone to Camp Mohawk before. The two both said they appreciated the work being done at the park.Camp Mohawk has the county's only stand of loblolly pines located on public land.

“If you look at an map of loblolly pine forests, there’s a little dot ... that sits right on top of Camp Mohawk,” Frazier said. “It is one of the few remaining public-access stands of loblolly pines.”“Much of that was cleared Houston and its suburbs,” Frazier said.“There’s really very few primitive tent sites in Brazoria County and really even in this whole region,” Frazier said. “We call them hiking sites but it's not a long hike from the parking area.”John DeLapp is a freelance writer.
