Altoona Lady Lions Hold Off Late Surge for 59-58 Win Over Central Dauphin

The Altoona Lady Lions defeated the Central Dauphin Lady Rams in a thrilling Mid-Penn Conference Commonwealth division matchup. Altoona built a double-digit lead in the first half thanks to strong defense and hot shooting, but Central Dauphin mounted a furious comeback in the second half. In the end, Altoona held on for a narrow 59-58 victory.

Two heavyweight opponents entered this Mid-Penn Conference Commonwealth division bout, and it didn’t disappoint. Central Dauphin entered the matchup undefeated and tied for first in the Commonwealth; not far behind was Altoona , who was in third place. Altoona (10-2. 5-1 Commonwealth) came out firing, building up a double-digit lead in the first half. CD (10-1, 5-1) flipped the script coming out of the break, but an exciting comeback attempt fell short leading to a 59-58 Altoona victory.

The Lady Lions were firing on all cylinders from the opening tip, jumping out to a 13-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game. Altoona forward Brionna Hudson set the tone early, scoring five points to start the run. Altoona’s full-court press and aggressive on-ball defense gave CD fits all half. Not to mention, the Lions couldn’t miss from deep, draining six threes in the first half. The Lady Lions took a 38-26 lead into halftime. Altoona’s defensive pressure caused all kinds of issues for CD in Q1. That paired with a hot shooting performance results in an awesome first half. CD gave up way too many open looks from three and at the rim. Altoona’s constant movement really gave CD fitsCD had a steep hill to climb to get back into the game, and Central Dauphin head coach Randy Gambelunghe had a simple message for his team. “Its not over,” Gambelunghe told his team. “We cant play defense like we did in the first half. We have to pressure the ball harder and fight through screens.” The Lady Rams defensive intensity picked up, and Altoona no longer had open looks at the rim or from three. CD outscored Altoona 16-10 in the third frame, cutting Altoona’s lead to 48-42 heading into the final quarter. Altoona continued to struggle, only converting on two field goals in the final quarter. CD, led by Olivia Green and Kayanah Taylor, clawed back, cutting Altoona’s lead to 52-5
