At just 23, Charen has lived on the streets, navigated addiction and been in and out of prison and rehab. She's now participating in a six-month program that's providing a successful alternative to prison for many.

The moment she realised she was being separated from her child and sent back into the concrete confines of prison will never leave Charen Briscoe.She knew exactly what awaited her inside the Alice Springs Correctional Centre, where inmates are crowded in and it can be blisteringly cold or boiling hot.

In the middle of the year, Charen lashed out at a family member, following what she says was years of pressure, and was arrested. "There are still rules that we have to follow and abide because it's your mistakes that led you here, but you get more of an opportunity to be yourself ... you can dress with your own clothes," Charen says.almost 60 per cent of people released from prison returning within a short period of time
