A Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy whose home was destroyed in the recent Eaton Fire shares his experience of loss and gratitude for the community's support as he looks towards rebuilding.

A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy is grappling with the aftermath of losing his home in the devastating Eaton Fire that swept through Altadena last week. Collin Davis, a member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team, allowed NBC Los Angeles to accompany him as he painstakingly sifted through the charred remains of his East Altadena Drive residence on Thursday. Davis had left his home the night the fire ignited last Tuesday, prepared to respond to any calls for help.

He shared videos from Wednesday showing his return to his property, where the flames were still fiercely burning. He also provided a poignant image of his home and those surrounding it before the Eaton Fire ravaged the area. Davis expressed his deep gratitude to the outpouring of support from family, friends, and even strangers who have donated and reached out with care and concern. 'Our natural job is to help other people,' he shared. 'So, it’s been really hard to let people help you.' Despite the personal tragedy, Davis, who is dedicated to search and rescue operations, finds solace in the spirit of resilience displayed by the Altadena community. He remains determined to rebuild, having called Altadena home for 20 years. 'We want to rebuild something,' Davis said. 'I’ve lived in this town for 20 years. You know, I just lived in this spot for a year. It was a really beautiful place to live. People are great and I want the best for them.
