KUTV went on a school bus ride along after multiple incidents have resulted in kids in the Alpine School District getting lost or not getting dropped off properly.

The Alpine School District shared with KUTV how they navigate their bus routes as nearly 18,000 students ride the bus to and from school daily. KUTV got on bus driver Kori Clark’s routes Monday afternoon in Alpine and Highland — serving elementary, middle and high school students. She started her route with a greeting to the students as they boarded the bus — something she said is important to do every single day. For Clark, the job goes beyond just driving — it's about making a positive impact on the kids' lives. “If I can change one kids’ life by changing it from a bad day to a good day, it’s awesome,” she said. One key practice is emphasizing training and retraining bus drivers. Additionally, the district uses a backpack tag system that labels where kindergarteners get on and off the bus. After every bus route, drivers are required to check every seat in the bus to make sure that every student made it off. The transportation team in the district handles a complex network of bus routes, managing a large volume of daily data to improve their services. Rich Stowell, director of communications for Alpine School District, addressed concerns raised by parents after a few reported incidents where students either got off at the wrong stop or boarded the wrong bus.“We are mindful of the resources we have in Alpine School District,” Stowell said. “We do the best we can with the limited resources that we have, and we would love more.” Despite the challenges, administrators emphasize the importance of teamwork in ensuring student safety, highlighting the collaboration on the roads of drivers and parents. Stowell emphasized the balance of training and working with the school board and higher levels to find improvement and address feedback as it comes.
