We're not sure the alpinecars A110 R provides the ultimate on-track capability we hoped for, but it fights back with a compelling on-road experience -
Top speed is now 177mph, with 0-62mph arriving in 3.9sec – for reference, the A110 S tops out at 171mph and clocks 4.2sec to 62. The 320mm Brembo brakes are the same as those fitted as standard on the A110 S and GT, but cooling has been improved by 20 percent thanks to some neat airflow management that reduces peak disc temperatures by up to 90deg C.
Driving on a racetrack tends to suck the speed out of all but the most powerful cars. Sadly, this proves to be the case with the Alpine. The Jarama circuit’s compact layout, sinuous mix of corners and swooping main straight lends itself to street cars, but the A110 R isn’t the firecracker we’d hoped for.Balance-wise it is resolutely stable. If anything, it’s too keen to run its nose wide.
The tone of the press briefing suggested the A110 R’s track focus had come with on-road compromises, but despite the obvious increase in spring rates, damping control and resistance to roll, as we head into the mountains north of Madrid there’s an underlying pliancy that suggests otherwise. Whatever the road, the R feels more of an event than it does on track; special in every circumstance and more rounded in its abilities.
Pace-wise you never feel truly pinned into the seat, but on roads that see you working at less than three-digit speeds the A110 R is in its element. The firm brake pedal encourages you to brake late and deep and the snappy DCT gearshifts punches up and down the ratios with crisp urgency. It’s in these moments that the R driving experience really crystallises and the A110 works its magic.Does it deliver on its promises? Only if you approach it with your eyes open.
