Widescreen displays can accommodate more apps on a screen without having to use a second screen. The ALOGIC Edge 21 is a wide screen aimed at users of the Mac mini M4.

The beauty of an ultra-wide screen is the ability to have more windows open at the same time or toHave you noticed the trend for the use of multiple monitors? It’s becoming increasingly common for computer users to have a couple of screens hooked up to their laptop when they working from the office.

It’s a good way of having more applications open so that you can have, say, emails and browser on one screen and a creative app like Apple’s Final Cut Pro or Adobe Photoshop on another. Two screens can increase productivity and most laptops can easily drive two displays. However, what do you do if you’re used to working on two screens at the office but you don’t have enough space for a couple of screens at home? Once you’ve got used to working with more apps open and visible at the same time, it can be hard to adapt to working at home with only a cramped 27-inch screen or even something smaller. If that sounds familiar to you, then the answer could be to get yourself an ultra-wide screen for use at home. These types of monitors have an extended width and offer a panoramic aspect ratio that make them much easier to accommodate up to three apps open on a screen at the same time. Even better, the footprint of a widescreen monitor is no larger than a single display. What’s not to like?If the idea of a widescreen appeals, then ALOGIC’s new Edge 21:9 Ultrawide QHD monitor could be worth a look. The Edge 21 is available in 34 and 40-inch sizes. ALOGIC is an Australian computer acccessory brand that’s been making waves with its Clarity monitor which has proved popular Apple Mac mini users because it’s design, 27-inch screen, 4K resolution all at a third of the price of Apple’s Studio Display. To get some hands-on experience of using a wide-screen display, I spent a week with ALOGIC’s 34" Edge 21:9 Ultrawide QHD model. The screen has a matte anti-glare surface instead of a shiny screen and is available in Silver or Space Gray finishes. The Edge 21 has a maximum resolution of 3,440 x 1,440 and a refresh rate of 100Hz, which can make for smoother scrolling. The brightness level is 400 nits, which is not as bright as the 1,000 nits offered by Apple’s more expensive Studio Display. The ALOGIC Edge 21 has some other handy features including an integral USB-C dock and 90W Power Delivery for powering a laptop from the screen. Audio, video, data and networking signals travel along a single cable, but if you don’t want to use USB-C the Edge 21 also has DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.0 options. The stand for the Edge 21 is a substantial and constructed from machined aluminum that ensures the screen is unlikely to fall over. The stand is made with 80% recycled aluminum, which boosts the eco credentials a little. Built into the casing of the screen are two small speakers with an output of 3W per channel that’s useful for playing alerts but not strong enough to play music well. The screen’s stand can be adjusted for height, tilt and swivel to ensure the user can choose the precise viewing position. And adjustable stand is a feature that costs an extra $400 for Apple’s Studio Display. If you don’t want to use the supplied stand you can attach the Edge 21 to a monitor boom arm with a 100mm VESA fastening. The overall weight without the stand is a manageable 6kg. The display panel used in this screen is an IPS type and offers a maximum resolution of 3,440 x 1,440 otherwise known as UWQHD. That’s not quite as fine a resolution as a 4K monitor, but with a screen of this size, a 4K setting would render the text too small to read comfortably. The display has a viewing angle of 178 degrees in both vertical and horizontal planes and a contrast ratio of 200:1. The response rate of the display is around 14ms, which may not be quite fast enough for some serious gamers but should be acceptable for most people’s office needs. The bezel is a slender 8mm and gives the Edge 21 a stylishand modern look that would match Apple’s Mac mini vibe. At the rear of the Edge 21 are the inputs and outputs for connecting the display. The connections are easy to see and access. From left to right, the connections begin with a DC barrel-type connector for the Edge 21’s external power brick. Next to that is an HDMI port, a DisplayPort and the main USB-C port.ALOGIC The USB-C port can carry video, power, audio, data and networking signals along the one cable. In the center of the row of inputs there is an Ethernet port with two USB-C data ports to its right which can be used for attaching peripherals or storage. Finally, there is a 3.5mm audio-out jack for connecting a pair of headphones or external powered speakers. Setting up the Edge 21 takes a few minutes and despite its size, the screen doesn’t take up much desk space. Adapting to using any wide screen can take a little while but being able to have three application open at once, without them overlapping each other, is a liberating experience. Having such a wide screen is also handy when viewing large spreadsheets or editing movies. The color rendition of the Edge 21 out of the box appears a little muted but switching to the Apple RGB setting can beef things up. Alternaticely, users can use a display calibration tool to produce a custom setting for their individualscree. The monitor’s settings can be altered extensively by accessing an on-screen menu which contains a comprehensive set of controls for parameters like contrast, brightness, color temperature and other settings. It’s probably best to calibrate the screen but the Apple RGB is a starting point to get going. If you’re going to use the Edge 21 for color-critical applications like Adobe Photoshop, then it’s worth noting that the color gamut coverage of the screen can yield DCI-P3 at 97%, SRGB at 99% and Adobe RGB at 94%. The Adobe setting is more muted than the others but, as mentioned, calibration is probably advisable. If a screen measuring 34 inches diagonally, isn’t enough for your needs, there’s always ALOGIC’s 40-inch version of the Edge 21. However, bear in mind that the larger screen doesn’t increase the resolution, just its physical size. The 40-inch model is better suited for group use or lecturing applications because text appears larger than on the 34-inch model. Accessories bundled with the Edge 21 include an HDMI cable, USB-C cable, plus a power adapter with a cloverleaf mains lead. Aspects worth noting are the anti-glare screen surface that is preferable to a shiny finish, although the saturation of colors on any matte screen will be slightly lower that with a shiny finish. The screen quality is crisp and the anti-glare finish means the surface is easier to look at during lengthy working sessions. Using a wider screen requires a little more twisting of the neck and that can take some getting used to. On the positive side, being able to have multiple windows open at the same time without having to shuffle apps around or use macOS Exposé all the time, makes for less fatiguing work. Spreadsheet users will definitely find a wide screen more convenient for accommodating larger sheets.Outputs: 1 x USB-C , 90W laptop charging and data) 1 x HDMI 2.0, 1 x DisplayPort 1.4, 2 x , 1 x Ethernet, 1 x 3.5mm audio.Power adapter: AC 100-240V~, 50/60Hz / DC 24V 7.5A, 180W .
