Editorial | Allow the IEC to deliver free elections, stop undermining its integrity
This year’s elections have been billed as a watershed as opposition parties strive to remove the ANC from power, with polls suggesting this is possible, meaning the party would lose its 51% majority for the first time since 1994.
Because of that, there is increased scrutiny on how the elections will be administered. Hence the Electoral Commission of SA has become the centre of focus for all the political parties, local and international observers, and all institutions and citizens who want to see a free and fair election. When the ANC and the Mkhonto weSizwe Party complained about leaked candidate lists, the IEC quickly admitted that the leak was from its side. This calls on everyone else to play their part. Political parties that cast aspersions on the IEC without a shred of evidence are not assisting.
It was particularly embarrassing for the DA to write a letter to the G7 governments – the US, the UK, Germany, France, Japan, Italy and Canada – as well as the EU and Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark for support with election observers. Our IEC has had no history of favouritism or maladministration since its formation. It was therefore baffling that the DA suddenly no longer trusted it with the election process.
The IEC needs the cooperation of all stakeholders in order to deliver peaceful and credible elections.Who we choose to trust can have a profound impact on our lives.
