Allentown held off a late rally by Lawrence, clinching a berth in the Central Jersey, Group 3 sectional final
Allentown head coach Brian Nice during the baseball game between Allentown and Robbinsville at Allentown High School in Allentown, NJ on 5/2/24.Allentown senior Dan Gualtieri probably couldn’t have imagined he would be in this situation just a few months ago.Around the end of February/early March, Gualtieri sustained a torn labrum in his left pitching shoulder. However, through physical therapy and rehab, Gualtieri worked his way back to get back on the mound for the Redbirds.
Gualtieri got the final four outs of the contest, lifting fourth-seeded Allentown past top-seeded Lawrence, 5-4, in the semifinals of the Central Jersey, Group 3 NJSIAA state tournament on Friday.Allentown advances to the Central, Group 3 sectional final where it will faced third-seeded Middletown South on Monday. Middletown South defeated Robbinsville in the other semifinal in the bracket.
Gualtieri ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh, opening the frame with a walk before getting the next two outs on fly outs. He then walked the fourth hitter of the inning before making one last pitch, inducing a groundout to first baseman Eddie Werse to clinch a berth in the sectional final for Allentown.
