The carrier operated from Akron-Canton from 2015 to 2017, when it left for the greener pastures of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, an hour drive to the north. At the time, airline officials said most of its passengers were from the Cleveland area, and preferred the convenience of Hopkins., Michael Graci, Allegiant’s manager of airport affairs, said it was a combination of cost factors and customer convenience that was bringing the airline back to CAK.
Allegiant spokeswoman Sonya Padgett declined to get specific about ticket sales, but said, “I can tell you that our return to Akron has been well-received by our customers who appreciate Allegiant’s affordable, nonstop service we provide to popular destinations.” Akron-Canton has been slow to recover from the dramatic downturn in air travel caused by the coronavirus pandemic. In 2021, the airport welcomed 331,607 passengers, fewer than half of the 813,976 in 2019. Cleveland Hopkins, meanwhile,, welcoming 7.3 million passengers in 2021, about 72% of its 2019 levels.
