Former Conservative chancellor Lord Clarke offered his own stinging rebuke of the mini-Budget on Wednesday night. “They have made a catastrophic start, the Budget was a serious mistake and it has caused a serious problem,” he told“I must admit I have never known a Budget cause a financial crisis immediately like this. When I listened to the budget I was rather astounded by its contents and I hope we very rapidly get out of it.
He added: “I hope that’s all been torn up, and I hope they are sitting down and listening to the Treasury, the Bank of England and economists who are very happy to give them proper advice.” “It is critical that the Government is honest about the current situation and plays its part in stabilising markets,” tweeted Mr Smith, a former chief whip who supported Mr Sunak in the leadership contest.
He also spoke out last Friday after the mini-Budget was announced, tweeting: “In a statement with many positive enterprise measures this huge tax cut for the very rich at a time of national crisis and real fear and anxiety amongst low-income workers and citizens is wrong.”In a tweet on Wednesday night, the MP for North Dorset, who backed Mr Sunak to be party leader, offered his own condemnation of the mini-Budget, calling it “inept madness”.
