Conducted through a series of online workshops between November 2021 and December 2023, this IUCN reassessment paints a bleak picture of sawfish survival. Despite efforts since the last assessment in 2012, sawfish populations continue to decline due to relentless threats from fishing activities and habitat loss. Previously categorized as ‘Critically Endangered’ and ‘Endangered,’ all five species now are labeled ‘Critically Endangered.
Despite facing intense pressure, sightings in poorly surveyed areas like Bangladesh, Sudan, and parts of Central America bring researchers a little bit of hope that the tenacity of these creatures will see them through this population decline. Grassroots education and outreach programs in these regions are fostering a shift in attitudes toward sawfish, emphasizing the importance of local-level conservation efforts. “The challenges seem daunting, but we have solutions at the ready.
