Skeleton Crew's biggest pop culture pirate references!
Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Skeleton CrewStar Wars: Skeleton Crew features an impressive number of Easter eggs and references to the greater galaxy far, far away. However, there's also a fun collection of meta references to classic pop culture pirates that help make Skeleton Crew show very unique.
Whether it's connections to The Goonies, Pirates of the Caribbean, or legendary pirates from real-life history, there are some great nods all over the new Star Wars series. ✕ Remove Ads As seen in Skeleton Crew, a group of young kids named Wim, Fern, Neel, and KB find themselves inadvertently lost in the Star Wars galaxy with no easy way to make it back to At Attin, their mysterious homeworld with connections to a lost and mystical treasure. This prompts the attention of several pirates, one of whom is Jude Law's Jod Na Nawood who partners with the kids to help them get home. With that in mind, Skeleton Crew's multiple pirate Easter eggs are quite fitting, so here are all the references we've found .12 The Onyx Cinder A Nod To The Black Pearl Close ✕ Remove Ads Having found an old ship buried in the woods of their homeworld, the kids of Skeleton Crew become the brand-new crew for The Onyx Cinder.Seeing as how onyx is shiny and black, it's more than likely that the ship's name was derived from The Black Pearl, Jack Sparrow's legendary black-sailed ship seen in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. 11 Captain Silvo Treasure Island's Long John Silver Close One of Jod Na Nawood's first known aliases is Captain Silvo. Shown wearing a helmet resembling a classic pirate's tricorn hat, the name Silvo mirrors Treasure Island's Long John Silver, which makes sense with Jod presenting himself as trustworthy while hiding his true intentions, just like the Silver of the original book by Robert Louis Stevenson and subsequent media adaptations. While Muppet Treasure Island with Tim Curry's Silver is a personal favorite, Disney's Treasure Planet is obviously a more apt comparison given the similar settings in space. ✕ Remove Ads 10 Wim is Jim Hawkins The Main Protagonist of Treasure Island/Planet Close Additionally, it follows that young Wim is meant to be a parallel to Treasure Planet's Jim Hawkins. This certainly fits given Wim's similar dreams of adventure and greater willingness to trust Jod/Silvo compared to his fellow kids from At Attin. 9 KB's Name Is Likely A Goonies Nod A Kilobyte Is A Unit Of "Data" Close Just like Wim is likely an intentional parallel to Jim Hawkins, KB and her cybernetic implants is likely meant to serve as an homage to Ke Huy Quan's Data from The Goonies, an Amblin Entertainment film about a group of young kids who find a lost pirate treasure, which has been cited as a key source of inspiration for this new Star Wars show. After all, KB stands for"kilobyte", a unit of"data" in real-life. ✕ Remove Ads 8 SM-33 Smee, First Mate To Captain Hook Close Shortly after The Onyx Cinder inadvertently takes off and leaves At Attin behind, the ship's droid first mate named SM-33 is reactivated and is convinced to serve the kids, specifically Fern whom he sees as his new captain. Naturally, SM-33 is a nod to Smee, the first mate of Captain Hook in J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan. Interestingly enough, Jude Law recently played Captain Hook in 2023's Peter Pan and Wendy. 7 Brutus And His Blasters A Parallel For Blackbeard Close ✕ Remove Ads The first mate who mutinies against Jod's Captain Silvo in Skeleton Crew episode 1, Brutus is a wolf-like Shistavanen who's shown carrying multiple blaster pistols across bandoliers on his chest. This is likely a nod to Edward Teach's Blackbeard, one of the most notorious pirates in real-life history. According to historical accounts, Blackbeard was said to have carried up to six flintlock pistols at once. 6 Port Borgo Mirroring Tortuga Close As seen in Skeleton Crew episodes 2 & 3, the kids are taken to the pirate shadow port known as Port Borgo, a safe haven for rogues and scoundrels across the galaxy. As such, Port Borgo looks and sounds a lot like the pirate port of Tortuga as seen in Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean movies. 5 Port Borgo's Fuel Lines Resembling Ship's Rigging ✕ Remove Ads While Port Borgo is located on a giant asteroid, all the pirate ships are docked outside in space with smaller pods ferrying them back and forth. As such, this certainly helps provide more of a pirate port aesthetic despite the setting in space. Likewise, the cherry on top is all the fuel lines running back and forth between ships, mirroring an actual pirate port on the ocean with ropes and rigging. 4 Whistling For Keys in the Brig Referencing The Pirates of the Caribbean Ride Close When Brutus has all the kids thrown in the brig after learning about At Attin at the end of Skeleton Crew episode 2, a familiar whistle is heard. Not only is it the same whistling from the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland, but the scene continues with the kids trying to coax an alien mouse to retrieve the nearby keys, just like the trio of pirates who try to coax the dog holding keys to come closer, as seen on the original ride and in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. ✕ Remove Ads 3 The Onyx Cinder's Skeleton With Blade In Their Chest Also, The Pirates of the Caribbean Ride The Onyx Cinder also has an alien skeleton hanging on one of its walls with a sword in its chest. This is also very similar to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, which notably features the remains of a long-dead pirate who met a similar fate. 2 Crimson Jack A Legends Reference Close Skeleton Crew episode 3 reveals that Jod Na Nawood also goes by Crimson Jack. A very exciting reference to non-canon Legends, Crimson Jack was the first pirate introduced in Marvel's original Star Wars comics released in the late 1970s after A New Hope. A rival of Han Solo's who robbed the smuggler of the reward given to him by the Rebellion to pay off Jabba, Crimson Jack eventually meets his demise at the hands of Solo himself. ✕ Remove Ads Related Skeleton Crew Drops Major 1970s Star Wars Lore Connections: Here's 22 Easter Eggs We Spotted Skeleton Crew episode 3 features a treasure trove of exciting Easter eggs and references, including a major connection to Legends lore from the 1970s. Posts Beyond the cool Legends connection, it's worth wondering if the Crimson Jack alias was chosen in part with a desire to create a Jack Sparrow parallel. This could certainly be the case considering all the other Pirates of the Caribbean references to be found in Skeleton Crew. Either way, it's worth pointing out the parallel, regardless of the intention on Lucasfilm's part. 1 Is Crimson Jack an Inherited Name? It Could Be Like Princess Bride's "Dread Pirate Roberts" Close ✕ Remove Ads It's also worth noting that there's already a Crimson Jack in the established Star Wars canon before Jude Law's Jod was revealed to be using the name. Debuting in Marvel's canonical Halcyon Legacy series, this different-looking Crimson Jack was shown operating much closer to the events of the sequel trilogy, attempting to sell Resistance secrets to the First Order. As such, it looks as though Star Wars now has two canonical Crimson Jacks. As such, it's possible Star Wars may reveal that the name is similar to Princess Bride's "Dread Pirate Roberts" where the name and legacy are passed on from pirate to pirate.Your Ratingclose10 stars9 stars8 stars7 stars6 star5 stars4 stars3 stars2 stars1 star Rate Now 0/10 Leave a Review Your comment has not been savedMy List My Favorite TV ShowsMy Watchlist Success! 8/10 99 8/10 Star Wars: Skeleton Crew TV-PGActionAdventure Sci-Fi Set in the Star Wars universe, Skeleton Crew follows four young adventurers as they become lost in the galaxy while searching for their home planet.
