From breaking down social barriers to helping colleagues feel more connected, these three icebreakers can help you warm up a group of stoics.
The first is called Common Ground. It’s ideal for introducing new people to one another or increasing rapport in colleagues who already work together. It takes about 15 minutes and is a favorite of the Bath & Bristol Marketing Network in the U.K. for small- and large-group events. Start by splitting the room of 30 people or fewer into groups of two to three and provide each group with a sheet of flip-chart paper and a Sharpie.
Speaking of competitive, the next icebreaker is geared toward senior leaders and managers in a group of 20 or fewer. It’s known as “That’s Fantastic!” and offers an ideal warm-up for creative or strategic sessions. You’ll need about 15 minutes—and one chair per group. Start by splitting the room into groups of three to four and ask groups to spread out across the room, bringing along just one chair.
Two guidelines: Since this is an ice breaker, not a Stephen King novel, none of the company’s dire issues should involve death. Also, everyone must sit in the CEO chair at least once. The last icebreaker is called “Tattoo You,” and Seton Hall University in New Jersey is rumored to use it when introducing new students and faculty. You can use it as a morning icebreaker to introduce new teams or to nudge folks out of a post-lunch food coma. It’s ideal for 15 or fewer people at any level in your organization and takes about 15 minutes.
