Its one of three projects for the town
Cheadle is set to finally get a railway station after millions of pounds of funding was approved to get the project underway. The Stockport town has secured nearly £14m from the government’s Towns Fund, which will go towards the construction of the station, and two other projects.
Securing the £13.9 million sum comes after two years of work from the Cheadle Town Board. Mary Robinson, MP for Cheadle, sits on the board and says the news is ‘a great day’. “This is a great day for Cheadle and it’s fantastic to have secured this funding from the Government,” she said. “A new station will plug Cheadle into the public transport network and help to address local congestion. I’m so pleased that the Station can now start to be brought forward”.

New sickle cell disease gene therapies depend on getting the right mouseSickle cell disease is an extremely debilitating condition that affects up to 40% of the population in African countries, with patients suffering episodes of excruciating pain, organ damage and reduced life expectancy. This disease is caused by a mutation in a gene that makes hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells, with the damaged hemoglobin distorting the shape of red blood cells, causing painful and potentially life-threatening blockages in blood vessels. However, scientists have realized that increasing the production of a healthy form of this protein (fetal hemoglobin, which is usually only produced when we are in the womb), could provide a revolutionary treatment for these patients.
