In the early episodes of the Netflix adaptation of One Piece, the show explains Luffy's strange rubber-like consistency.
When he was younger, Luffy ate something known as a Devil Fruit, a mysterious piece of food that imbues someone with powers while also coming at a price. In Luffy's case, he ate the Gum Gum Fruit. This changed Luffy's biological makeup to make him stretchy, immune from various methods of damage, and much more powerful than the average human. Throughout Netflix's One Piece, Luffy and his ragtag Straw Hat Pirate crew make a variety of enemies, many of whom Luffy comes into conflict with personally. As such, here is every time Luffy uses one of his self-labeled Gum Gum attacks in the live-action adaptation, something undoubtedly set to continue in a potential One Piece season 2. 8 Gum Gum Pistol Despite some story changes being made to Netflix's One Piece from the anime and manga, the depiction of Luffy's powers is not one of them. Undoubtedly the most commonly used attack from Luffy throughout Netflix's One Piece is what the wannabe King of the Pirates calls Gum Gum Pistol. Despite the somewhat misleading name, this attack involves Luffy stretching his arm far behind his back before the elasticity pulls it back to allow Luffy to unleash an incredibly powerful punch. The first instance in which Gum Gum Pistol is used is in the opening moments of One Piece's first episode, when Luffy saves Koby from Alvida the pirate. Due to being the most commonly used attack from Luffy, the Gum Gum Pistol is not his most powerful. That said, the attack is certainly powerful enough to best most humans and other species, though proves less powerful on stronger beings like Arlong and his Fish-Men. As such, the power of Gum Gum Pistol is high for regular goons and pirates Luffy faces, but less effective against stronger opponents. 7 Gum Gum Whip Another of Luffy's iconic Gum Gum attacks comes in One Piece episode 1. At the end of the episode, Luffy and his new allies - Nami and Roronoa Zorro - face off against Axe-Hand Morgan and his Marines. After Zoro subdues Morgan, Luffy screams his attack - the Gum Gum Whip - before performing a roundhouse kick from across the courtyard. Luffy's leg stretches to act almost as the titular whip, wrapping around to catch Morgan in the side of the face. The kick is incredibly powerful, enough to send someone as bulky as Axe-Hand flying backward. While not used again in One Piece season 1, the attack is one of Luffy's stronger moves. 6 Gum Gum Bazooka As hinted at by the name of the move shouted by Luffy in One Piece episode 2, Gum Gum Bazooka is essentially just an upgrade of the Gum Gum Pistol attack. Rather than use one arm to stretch back and forth to punch his opponent, Luffy uses two arms during Gum Gum Bazooka. The move is used at the end of One Piece episode 2 to dispatch Buggy the Clown Pirate, with Luffy stretching back both hands before sending them flying into Buggy and subsequently sending Buggy flying away from Orange Town. Due to the nature of Luffy using both hands for the Gum Gum Bazooka attack, it is one of Luffy's more powerful moves. It is more powerful than the Gum Gum Pistol. While only being used on a small version of Buggy whose arms and legs had been trapped - as Buggy ate a Devil Fruit that allows him to remove parts of his body yet remain in control of them - the Gum Gum Bazooka is still shown as one of Luffy's stronger finishing attacks with its anime-like nature allowing Netflix’s One Piece adaptation to end a streak of poor anime retellings in live-action. 5 Gum Gum Bell Unlike the preceding, self-contained two episodes, One Piece episodes 3 and 4 tell an overarching story of Luffy, Zoro, and Nami recruiting a sharpshooter named Ussop into their crew while aiding Ussop's friend Kaya. It is revealed that Kaya's butler, Klahadore, is actually a pirate named Kuro who is enacting a plan to steal Kaya's wealth, forcing the Straw Hat crew to stop him and save Kaya. In order to do so, Luffy confronts the pirate directly at the end of One Piece episode 4. To defeat Kuro, Luffy uses a new attack dubbed the Gum Gum Bell. This move involves Luffy stretching his neck to allow for an immensely powerful headbutt. Luffy uses this move to dispatch Kuro. Due to Kuro's human nature, the move is depicted on a similar high power level to that of the Gum Gum Pistol with the evil pirate flying back out of a window and away from Kaya's compound. 4 Gum Gum Balloon Interestingly, the Gum Gum Balloon attack is the only one used by Luffy throughout Netflix's One Piece that is not named by Luffy himself. The name comes from the anime and manga of One Piece, yet Luffy does not yell the name of the attack before enacting it as he does with the others. Regardless, the Gum Gum Balloon allows Luffy to stretch his stomach to a massive size, emulating the titular balloon. In One Piece episode 5, the move is used to send a cannonball flying back to an enemy Marine ship, both protecting Luffy's crew and damaging the enemy vessel. Due to the more defensive nature of the Gum Gum Balloon, it is difficult to state how strong the move is. Essentially, the Gum Gum Balloon is as strong as whatever Luffy is reflecting as that seems to be the move's primary usage. In the case of One Piece episode 4, Luffy reflected a cannonball that destroyed the masthead of a Marine ship meaning it held the power of that specific projectile. 3 Gum Gum Gatling Due to being the finale of One Piece, episode 8 of the Netflix show includes three different Gum Gum moves. The first is yet another evolution of the Gum Gum Pistol, dubbed the Gum Gum Gatling. The move takes its name from a Gatling gun, a rapid-fire firearm. As such, Luffy's Gum Gum Gatling is the repeated use of the Gum Gum Pistol in which he bombards his target with multiple stretchy punches. This move is used in the final battle against Arlong in One Piece episode 8. As it is an endless barrage of Gum Gum Pistol attacks, the Gum Gum Gatling is incredibly powerful and especially effective at wearing enemies down. This was shown with Arlong, with Luffy subduing the villainous pirate with the move long enough to prepare for his next Gum Gum attack. 2 Gum Gum Battleaxe The move in question is something Luffy dubs the Gum Gum Battleaxe. With this attack, Luffy stretches his leg far into the air, before bringing it down in one huge sweeping motion to hit his target with his foot. The move is called Battleaxe as a battleaxe is a medieval, long-range weapon with blades at the end of a spear. In the case of One Piece, Luffy's leg acts as the spear while his foot acts as the blade, hence Gum Gum Battleaxe. Above all other Gum Gum moves in Netflix's One Piece, Gum Gum Battleaxe is arguably the most powerful. When using the move in One Piece episode 8, Luffy's leg smashes through multiple layers of Arlong's main building, crushing stone, tiling, and wood on the way down to Arlong. Upon reaching the villain, Luffy's foot then pushes Arlong through multiple layers of the floor, proving Gum Gum Battleaxe to be an incredibly powerful attack. 1 Gum Gum Rocket The final Gum Gum move Luffy uses in Netflix's One Piece appears in his final fight against his grandfather, Garp. This move is called Gum Gum Rocket and involves Luffy stretching both arms out in front of him and hooking onto anchors to shoot him forward into an incredibly powerful punch. This explains the name Gum Gum Rocket and would be one of Luffy's more powerful attacks were it not for the strength of Garp who easily negated the move. With One Piece season 2 hopefully being announced soon, Luffy may be able to test out Gum Gum Rocket - alongside the rest of his arsenal - again in the future.
