The Darksaber, the black lightsaber that served as the legendary blade of Mandalorian leadership, has many complex rules surrounding it.
The Darksaber is one of Star Wars' most important lightsabers, appearing in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and The Mandalorian. According to Lucasfilm's Dave Filoni, the Darksaber was created when George Lucas heard of a story in which the Mandalorian rebel Pre Vizsla faced Obi-Wan Kenobi with a vibroblade. Lucas objected to the idea a vibroblade could stop a lightsaber, and came up with the Darksaber instead.
6 A Non-Mandalorian Can Wield The Darksaber Star Wars: The Clone Wars revealed the Darksaber can be wielded by a non-Mandalorian, who therefore has a claim to become the rightful ruler of all Mandalorian clans while bypassing their initiation rituals. This was proved by Darth Maul, who defeated Pre Vizsla in battle and claimed the Darksaber.
4 The Darksaber’s Wielder Must Win It In Combat The owner of the Darksaber is the legitimate ruler of Mandalore, and the rules surrounding it define the terms of succession. Appropriately for a warrior culture, a challenger must defeat the current owner in combat. This rule was introduced in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, when Darth Maul bested Pre Vizsla to take command of Mandalore and tie the Mandalorians in to his criminal empire, the Shadow Collective.
2 What Constitutes A Challenge For The Darksaber? It's not entirely clear what constitutes a formal challenge for possession of the Darksaber. Star Wars: The Clone Wars appeared to suggest a formal challenge must be made to duel for the right to rule Mandalore, but this was abandoned in Star Wars Rebels, which implied simply owning the black lightsaber was enough to lead the Mandalorian clans.
