A Bering Air turboprop plane crashed into ice on the Bering Sea, killing all 10 people onboard. Recovery crews faced challenges due to the drifting ice floe, but were able to recover all bodies. The NTSB will investigate the cause of the crash. The incident has deeply affected the communities of Unalakleet and Nome.
All ten people aboard a Bering Air single-engine turboprop plane that crashed into ice on the Bering Sea have been recovered, authorities said. The plane, traveling from Unalakleet to the hub community of Nome, disappeared Thursday afternoon and was found the next day with all nine passengers and the pilot dead. Recovery crews faced difficult conditions as the aircraft is on an ice floe that is drifting about 5 miles (8 kilometers) a day.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) chair Jennifer Homendy said during a press conference Saturday afternoon that the NTSB will diligently work to determine the cause of the crash, with the aim of improving safety in Alaska and across the United States. The community of Unalakleet mourned the loss of two vital members: Rhone Baumgartner and Kameron Hartvigson, who were technicians traveling to service a crucial heat recovery system for the community’s water plant. Their loss, along with the pilot, 34-year-old Chad Antill of Nome, and the other victims, who ranged in age from 30 to 58, has deeply affected Alaska. The Cessna Caravan left Unalakleet at 2:37 p.m. Thursday, and officials lost contact with it less than an hour later. Radar forensic data indicated the plane experienced a rapid loss in elevation and speed around 3:18 p.m. The Coast Guard stated that no distress signals were received from the aircraft. Flying is crucial in Alaska due to its vastness and limited infrastructure. Bering Air serves 32 villages in western Alaska, operating from hubs in Nome, Kotzebue, and Unalakleet. The company expressed their grief and offered support to the families of the victims.
