Alison Brie expresses her desire to return to the wrestling series GLOW, which was abruptly cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Six years after its final episodes aired on Netflix, Alison Brie still yearns to step back into the ring for GLOW . The series, originally slated for a fourth and concluding season, had begun production when the Covid-19 pandemic brought filming to a halt, effectively ending its run.
Brie expressed her sentiments about the show during an interview with Collider's Steve Weintraub at the Sundance Film Festival, where she and her husband, Dave Franco, are promoting their latest horror film, Together. When asked about the project she would recommend to someone unfamiliar with her work, Brie's response was unambiguous: 'For me, it has to be GLOW. I love that show, and I just feel so proud of the work that everybody did on that show. Personally, I feel like it's the only job where I got to do every type of thing. Like comedy, check; drama, check; super physical work, check. We essentially got to play two different characters. I got to play Ruth Wilder, and I got to play Zoya in the ring. I just think that it turned out to be this great showcase for everybody to go, 'Look, we have a lot of weird, special skills! Here they are.''Later in the conversation, when inquired about potential projects she'd like to revisit, Brie confirmed her desire to return to GLOW, as its fourth season was tragically cut short: 'We were meant to make a fourth season of the show. We shot the first one and a half episodes. I shot this huge wrestling sequence with real pro wrestlers. It was a tag team match. It was so fun. That will never see the light of day. I just would love to spend one more day with all my gals.' GLOW, loosely inspired by the true-life 1980s all-female wrestling promotion, the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, revolved around aspiring actress Ruth Wilder (Brie), who secures a role in a budding wrestling federation orchestrated by veteran writer Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron). She adopts the persona of Soviet villain Zoya the Destroya, while her on-screen rival (and sometimes off-screen adversary) is all-American darling Liberty Belle, portrayed by Betty Gilpin, who also happens to be Ruth's former best friend. The series chronicles their turbulent relationship, alongside the personal and professional lives of their fellow wrestlers and the struggles of GLOW's financier, Bash Howard (Chris Lowell). It also follows the show-within-a-show as GLOW ascends to cult status on local television before transitioning to a live show in Las Vegas.Although a GLOW revival seems improbable, Alison Brie's upcoming projects are plentiful. Together, premiering at Sundance, stars Brie and Franco as a couple who undergo a unique form of bonding through body horror. Next year, she will portray the menacing Evil-Lyn in Travis Knight's Masters of the Universe film. She is also slated to reprise her role as Annie Edison in the much-anticipated Community movie. All three seasons of GLOW are available for streaming on Netflix. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates from Sundance
