‘Alien: Romulus’ review: Less thinking, more screaming results in the scariest ‘Alien’ movie in decades

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Somewhere along the way, the “ Alien ” franchise became too complicated and pretentious. “ Alien : Romulus” — the seventh entry in the original series — means to right the ship by recapturing the spirit of the original.

By following a familiar formula — assemble a crew with a strong female lead, throw in an android sidekick, trap them on an alien-infested ship and see who makes it out alive — director Fede Alvarez succeeds. But this isn’t strictly a nostalgia play as Alvarez and a talented young cast breathe new life into a saga that needed it.
